Holme Fell Reservoir: wild swim with mountain backdrop
If you're after a swim spot that’s easy to reach but still feels truly wild, the reservoir by Holme Fell is a hidden gem in the Lake District. Of the two small reservoirs here, the larger one is best for swimming. Surrounded by heather, trees, and dramatic fells, it feels intimate and secluded. Aside from a few hikers heading up Holme Fell, we had the place almost to ourselves.
Getting there + parking
There’s a free layby for parking along the road near Hodge Close Quarry (Postcode: LA21 8DJ/Google maps pin). When we visited midweek, there was plenty of space, though it was starting to fill up by the time we returned. You can spot the reservoir easily using satellite view.

Route to swim spot
Walk + swim route
Distance: Just under 2.5 miles (4 km) loop (swim + summit return)
Elevation gain: Less than 150 m
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Time needed: Around half a day if you want to swim, picnic, and take in the views. Or roughly an hour for a shorter out-and-back swim route.
From the quarry layby, follow the gravel path to the right of the quarry lake. It becomes more natural and rocky as you climb, but it's still manageable underfoot. After about 15 minutes (around 300 m uphill), you'll reach the first and larger reservoir—a peaceful, scenic spot for a dip.
There are a few entry points. We chose the first one you come to, which had a gentle, rocky slope that quickly deepens. There’s another near the dam wall and one on the far side, although the latter was a bit weedy during our visit. Swim shoes are useful here, as the rocks can be a little slippery. The water was a comfortable temperature, and with trees surrounding the lake, it’s a great spot to hang a hammock and relax post-swim.
Things to note: If you're visiting with children, be especially cautious in the car park area. There is a very steep drop into the Quarry Lake, which is sectioned off with a wire fence, but the fence wouldn’t prevent someone from slipping underneath. Keep little ones close by when you're near the edge.

Make it a semi loop with Holme Fell summit
After your swim, continue uphill to the summit of Holme Fell (317 m / 1,040 ft). The path is steeper as it climbs across heather-covered slopes, but it’s not too long. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over Coniston Water and the surrounding fells.
To complete the loop, descend via a different path that circles past Yew Tree Tarn and rejoins your original route near the car park. You can find several route variations on AllTrails, so it’s worth checking the app to tailor the walk to your time and energy.
