The best all terrain pram for off road adventures

As first-time parents, the excitement of getting everything ready for your little one’s arrival is real — but so is the overwhelm. The moment you start looking into baby gear, you're hit with a flood of ads and product recommendations. It can quickly feel like you need everything under the sun.

When it came to choosing a pram, we wanted to get it right — especially since we spend a lot of time outdoors and knew we’d need something that could handle more than a potter round town. We spoke to friends, tested prams at baby shows, and were very nearly persuaded to go all in on a £500+ travel system. But after hearing stories of friends who were already on their third or fourth pram, we paused. Did we really want to spend that much on something we might end up replacing or having multiple versions to fit different purposes?

So we researched, narrowed things down, and landed on two great options: the Mountain Buggy Terrain and the iCandy Peach All-Terrain. Both are designed for active families and handle rough ground well — ideal for woodland walks, coastal paths, and countryside tracks. Here’s what we found during our search:

What to Look for in an Off-Road Pram

Before we dive into the models, here are a few key things to look for if you're planning on taking your pram off the beaten path:

  • 3 Wheels / All-terrain wheels: Look for large, air-filled tyres that can handle uneven ground, providing a smoother ride for your baby. Three-wheel designs are often more manoeuvrable on rough terrain.

  • Lightweight but sturdy frame: A pram that’s easy to lift in and out of the car but still robust enough to withstand the bumps and knocks of outdoor adventures is key.

  • Good recline + comfort: Especially important for longer walks. A good recline feature ensures your little one is comfortable and can nap easily on the go.

  • Flexibility + versatility: If you’re planning to use your pram from birth, opt for one that includes a bassinet and allows for a world- or parent-facing seat. This adaptability will grow with your baby.

  • Storage space: Off-road outings come with plenty of extra gear. Look for a pram with a spacious basket to carry snacks, nappies, and other essentials. As toddler parents, we now find ourselves packing the potty and spare clothes — it’s amazing how quickly you’ll need space!

Mountain Buggy Terrain

The Mountain Buggy has a reputation for being tough and reliable. It’s designed specifically for off-road use with large, 16" rear wheels and excellent suspension. It folds relatively flat, has loads of storage, and you can swap the front wheel from swivel to fixed depending on the terrain / if you are running with it or not.

We loved that it felt solid and handled really well on rough paths. It also has a hand brake — perfect if you're walking downhill with a fully loaded basket.

Pros:

  • Excellent for off-road use on rugged trails

  • Large wheels for a smooth ride

  • Suitable for newborns with the carrycot

  • Convertible to use with a car seat

  • Medium-sized storage basket

  • Ideal for running or jogging

Cons:

  • Bulky when folded

  • Can feel clunky with the bassinet attached

  • Heavier than some other models

  • Not convertible to a double pram (requires a different model)

  • High push position may be uncomfortable for shorter people (like me!)

iCandy Peach All-Terrain

The iCandy Peach All-Terrain is often seen as the ‘Apple’ of prams, offering a sleek design and a modular system that grows with your family. While its wheels are slightly smaller than the Mountain Buggy's, it still performs well on trails and feels lighter and more compact overall.

This pram strikes a great balance between town and trail use, offering flexibility without being too bulky. It’s a versatile option that can be customised to suit your needs, with a range of colours and configurations available.

Pros:

  • Great for off-road use

  • Medium wheels for a smooth ride

  • Suitable from newborn with carrycot

  • Can be used with a car seat

  • Ample storage

  • More compact than other all-terrain prams

  • Can be adapted into a double pram as your family grows

Cons:

  • Not as rugged as the Mountain Buggy

  • Expensive when bought new (around £1.4k+ depending on the package)

Quick general comparison

We won’t go into a detailed spec comparison, as models and features can change over time. If you’re buying second-hand, you may also end up with an older version of the pram compared to what's currently available on the market.

Buying Second Hand

Both of these prams are high-end models, so we explored the option of buying second-hand, and were pleasantly surprised by what we found. Many people sell them in excellent condition, making it a great way to save money without compromising on quality. Places like Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and dedicated pre-loved baby gear sites are perfect places to look.

We found our iCandy Peach Jogger (the old name for the Terrain model) for just £20 on Facebook. It came with the baby bassinet, which had been barely used, the toddler seat, and two rain covers. It just needed a good clean and a new handle grip, which we sourced for a fiver on eBay. We also added a cup holder (£15 from John Lewis), which has been essential for daily walks, especially for holding our little one’s water bottle or my coffee, and we picked up car seat adaptors (£10 on Facebook Marketplace) to make it compatible with our Cybex car seat.

Since these models have been around for a while and are so popular, replacement parts and attachments are easy to find, whether new or second-hand. With the upgrades we made, we spent under £50, and the pram has served us for three years without any issues. It’s still going strong with no need for additional prams for other purposes! It is a bit heavier than some of the newer versions, but considering the price we paid and how well it’s performed, we can’t complain!

Final Thoughts

Both prams have their strengths, but it ultimately comes down to what you need. If you’re into running or tackling more rugged trails, the Mountain Buggy is an excellent choice. However, if you’re looking for a versatile, compact pram that can handle both town and country life, while also adapting as your family grows, we think the iCandy is the better option.

We’re really happy with our decision to go for a second-hand iCandy All-Terrain pram over the Mountain Buggy. It’s much more compact, the handle adjusts to a lower height (perfect for someone small like me), and it will continue to serve us well as our family expands. Buying second-hand has saved us a lot of money, and this pram has handled everything we’ve thrown at it — from mud to gravel to beach sand. Most importantly, it’s allowed us to keep doing the things we love, with our little one in tow.

Note: If you go for air-filled tyres: they handle off-road adventures much better, but it's wise to carry a small pump, patch kit, or spare tube on longer trips. We’ve run over plenty of thorns, and while we've only had one puncture in three years, it was still manageable — we were able to push the pram back home and fix it when we got there.
